Our little Smokey is now in the vet's hospital, having treatment for acute kidney failure.

If you believe in the power of prayer, please say a prayer for him, he needs it.

He has been the light of our lives since we found him in the snow, aged 2 months, 8 years ago.

Is he the one I met? He liked me. [insert joke here]

And I liked him. God speed, Smokey.

Thoughts with you Rosie.

I never wanted a cat. I wasn't a 'cat person'. I wanted a Basset Hound like the one from Dukes of Hazzard. The wife wanted a cat.

We got a cat.

When me and the missus separated (you can only be reasonable for so long....though she saw if differently), I kept the house, I kept the cat.

Me and Bez had a kind of love/hate relationship, and to be fair both those emotions were on my side, he didn't really care as long as he was fed.

He got run over two months ago in the road outside the front door, I got to him just before he died.

I never thought the house would feel so empty.

I miss him every day, and I'm tearing up as I write this.

A few years ago I'd have thought when I read your post "it's only a cat", but not now. Now I know different.

I don't believe in the power of prayer, but I am sending you every positive thought I can.

Just phoned the vet: she still has to do a couple of important tests this afternoon, but the good news is that Smokey is feeling much better and is not in the pathetic state he was in on Sunday, when he was admitted.

TGK, I know exactly how you feel. We have 3 cats but Smokey is so special, it is breaking our hearts to think we might lose him.

Thank you so much or your kind thoughts.

The test results are in: a hopeless case, his kidneys are beyond repair. The vet is bringing him home in half an hour and we can spend our last hours together, then she will return in the morning to euthanise him.

Aw, there is truly nothing worse.

You gave him a life and a home.

We took our first gwp to the vets to xray a trapped nerve. He had bone cancer and didnt leave. It was right there right now and horrid.

We had a wonderful evening: Smokey was so glad  to be home again and sat on my lap all evening, purring like a machine. I brought my bedding downstairs and slept with him on the sofa. He is in good spirits and I have to remain strong for what is coming at lunch time. Jan isn't here and had to go to see his family in the west, It's just as well, since he would be in a worse state than I am.

Thank you darling Smokey or 8 wonderful years.

YM, that is indeed a horrible story, you must have been devastated,

I wrote a very reproachful letter to my first vet yesterday: she pissed about, gave him antibiotics and fluids, but did not do a blood test, not even on our second emergency consultation. My current vet says if Smokey had had proper treatment on that first visit, he would have had a chance of recovery.

OK, our little boy has gone. He went very calmly and peacefully thanks to our lovely vet.

Thank you all your support and kindness, it really meant a lot to me.

Nothing I hate more than that last trip to the vet.  I'm so sorry.

She shat in the kitchen this morning....

Thank you, TGK.

I buried him yesterday in the garden, in a bed of coriander and forget-me-nots.

I am sleeping a lot, and having lots of strange dreams.
