Yet another thing we do better in London than New York. They should be ashamed of themselves, we don't even have guns  Cool

Seriously though, this is just another example of media hype. Statistically, 46 people out of a population of nearly 9 million is not mathematically significant - even if the previous year was 23 people (hence a 'spike' of 100%) over all the numbers are so small as a percentage that they can't be taken to indicate a general trend as opposed to a run of bad luck. It's just innumerate reporting.

This should help put the supposed 'spike' in perspective:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_London

Even if we multiply the 46 by four, assuming that we will have the same number every quarter the 'spike' is from 130 to 184, which is comparable to the 1996 - '97 'spike' of  139 - 190.

And if you think of the murder rate as a percentage of London's population it has been going down year on year.

A bit like terrorism...

This is interesting:

The Afghan Taliban have been fighting against IS in Afghanistan and repeatedly assured neighbouring countries, that unlike IS, their armed struggle is limited to Afghanistan. In December 2015, the Russian president's special representative to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, declared that "the Taliban interest objectively coincides with ours" in the fight against IS.

Russia has also suggested the possibility of staging a Syrian-style intervention in Afghanistan if IS gained strength and became a "serious threat" to the stability of Central Asian countries on the pretext of protecting its "backyard".

However, US officials say Moscow uses the IS presence as an excuse to justify its meddling in Afghanistan and to further grow its military influence in Central Asia.

I have images of one of those IS militia going up to the US and saying "give us money and arms 'cos  we're fighting the Taliban and Russia for freedom. Innit?"

I honestly don't think we have a clue who we are fighting against or what we are fighting for. The whole thing is a farce.

So far - thankfully.

I can't help that think if this had been some goon pretending to be part of ISIS sending threatening letters we'd be on a code red high alert, with police cars charging up and down the streets, armed police on the seaside, and countless announcements about unattended luggage in stations across the land.

I'm all in favour of a subdued media response to this kind of thing, but it's not consistently subdued.

Yeah, we've decided just to let Smarty be Smarty and to go on the rampage every evening, which is his nature.

Of course I check the traps first thing every morning!

Let the cat do its thing. Nature red in tooth and claw etc.

My mum once got a humane trap to catch a rabbit that had got into her garden. It never caught anything so after a while she stopped checking it.

Months later she came across it and found a rabbit skeleton. The poor thing had got stuck in there and starved to death. The bitterest of ironies, in the effort to provide a humane death, she ended up inflicting the worst death imaginable. It's a cruel world.

Moral of the story - if you want to use humane traps, remember to check and empty them. Regularly.

This is obviously a job for . . . SuperTone!

Blair should go and stand between IS and Taliban, USA and Russia, and wreak peace among them. I'd pay good money to arrange a drone to video that for posterity.
